A natural essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic (cannot be mixed with or dissolved in water) liquid that contains aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as aetherolea, ethereal oils and volatile oils, they are a natural product that is extracted from a single plant. Please note that not all plants produce essential oils, the plants that do produce the essential oil may be found in the leaves, flowers, roots, stems or fruits. Some examples would be, oil of clove, rose oil and peppermint oil.

Pretty amazing right? The oils are either diluted and rubbed on the skin, or inhaled. If you choose to inhale the aroma from the essential oils they can stimulate certain areas of your limbic system (the portion of the brain that deals with three key functions: emotions, memories and arousal). If you apply the oils to the skin the oil molecules are so tiny they are able to pass through the outer layer of the epidermis ( the stratum corneum).
